Teenagers in the Netherlands Died After Inhaling Deodorant to Get Drunk

In a recent report in the British Medical Journal there was a 19-year-old teenager who died after breathing deodorant spray. According to Dr. Kelvin Harvey Kramp from Maasstad Hospital the teenager died of cardiac arrest.

Why deodorants can cause cardiac arrest is not certain, but according to Dr. Kelvin there may be a chemical content in the spray that causes stress to the heart of the teenager.

"To stop this abuse we can only try to increase the awareness of teenagers, parents, and medical staff about the dangers of using spray that is not supposed to," Kelvin said as quoted by CNN on Monday (11/19/2018).

Before experiencing cardiac arrest, the teenager reported being hyperactive jumping after inhaling deodorant. According to Dr. Kelvin this effect can be due to butane gas in sprays that do produce effects like alcohol.

"The intention is to abuse this substance so that you can get drunk feeling euphoric and disinhibited," continued Dr. Kelvin.

It's just that if done there is a danger ranging from damage to the liver, kidneys, to the brain.
